1) Don't need the "lit." tag since the "fig." tag has been deleted (back in 2010).

2) "belittle" doesn't seem like the right word here.

"belittle" is about what one *expresses* whereas 重男轻女 is, I think, about one's *attitude*, which may or may not be expressed verbally.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/belittle

e.g.
TP ~ 農業社會對勞動力的需求一般被認為是重男輕女的主要緣由。
The need for manpower is generally seen as the main reason for boys being preferred over girls in agricultural societies.
[i.e. it's not that they necessarily belittle (speak disparagingly of) girls; they just value them less]

重男輕女觀念雖然不易消弭,
although the mentality of favoring boys over girls is unlikely to die out,
[i.e. it's about favoring one gender over the other, and not specifically about saying nasty things about girls]
Diff:
- 重男輕女 重男轻女 [zhong4 nan2 qing1 nu:3] /lit. to value males and belittle females (idiom)/
+ 重男輕女 重男轻女 [zhong4 nan2 qing1 nu:3] /to value males and attach less importance to females (idiom)/
