As far as I can tell, the current definition seems quite wrong (not to mention wordy).
"obsequiously"?
"intercede"?

"on behalf of another"?
"for a third party"?
There is no 3rd party in M's example, in the TP example, or in example #1 below.

FE ~ to do somebody a favor for the sake of one's friendship with a third party, with whom the former is closely related or associated

A ~ 賣面子[卖--] mài miànzi* v.o. be pretentious (in doing favors)
[this definition doesn't seem to match usage]

As long as you talk to him properly, he will save your face and do you a favor.
He is my husband’s friend. He helps you only because of the honor of my husband.

Maybe we could add a note like
賣X的面子 means "to be obliging to X; to do a favor because of one's relationship with X"
Diff:
- 賣面子 卖面子 [mai4 mian4 zi5] /to obsequiously bequeath favors on behalf of another/to give face to sb by doing favors on their behalf/to curry favor for a third party/to intercede on another's behalf/
# + 賣面子 卖面子 [mai4 mian4 zi5] /to be obliging/
+ 賣面子 卖面子 [mai4 mian4 zi5] /to show deference to sb by obliging them (or by obliging sb associated with them)/
