Some of them may be English sentences that were poorly translated into Chinese. For example, the 2nd last one ("Holt writes ...") looks a dodgy. It seems to have been written in English originally. The Chinese 指食 doesn't correspond to either "ellipses and circles" or "eclipses and circles". Certainly, it's not a sense that is mentioned in either of the two quoted dictionaries. 2) As for to "shine over (some place)", that can't be right. "the sun shines over (some place)" might be possible, but that could be considered a construct 阳光 + 普照. For example, 清晨时金色阳光普照海湾 (example from the Web) is not an instance of 阳光普照 as a fixed expression, because 金色阳光普照海湾 can be parsed as (金色阳光) (普照) (海湾) (golden sunlight) (bathes in light) (the bay) 3) Here are my examples. Importantly, these sentences were all originally written in Chinese.
