"cf" is a vague expression because it refers the reader to something without explaining what the connection is. It should be used sparingly. My suggestion is, don't use it in writing cc-cedict definitions when a more specific expression is applicable. Another thing about "cf" is that style guides say it is supposed to be used "to provide contrasting or opposing information." However, many people use it to mean things like "by way of illustration, see ..." It's used like that many times in cedict. In other words, it's hopelessly ambiguous, IMO. <end of rant> |
