Consider the following examples, which show that 見識 a) involves first-hand experience (whereas "increasing one's knowledge" can be done by reading a book, for example) b) may involve experiencing sth *new* (whereas "increasing one's knowledge" suggests that one already knows a bit about the subject) Examples: 1) 讓爸爸見識到遊戲的魅力。 allowing his father to see the game's charm firsthand. > His dad didn't just increase his knowledge of the game. He had a first-hand experience of it. 2) 緊接著桌上擺出幾座朝天頂立的陽具模型，要請學生們「試戴」，沒「見識」過的女孩摀嘴偷笑， several upright models of erect penises are placed on a table for the students to try putting condoms on.
