<< review queue entry 61511 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> 1) Just about all dicts seem to say "criticize and denounce". I guess it must originate in ACE ('78). Let me check ... Yep, there it is: "criticize and denounce sb. (at a public meeting)". 2) But "criticize and denounce" is an odd expression, rather like saying "hit and assault". I mean, can you denounce sb without criticizing them? 3) Also, that gloss doesn't quite convey the horrific nature of 批斗 as described in the following quote: 1949年,農民在中國共產黨的鼓動、安排下,開展大規模批鬥大會。 https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%98%B6%E7%BA%A7%E6%88%90%E5%88%86#%E6%89%B9%E6%96%97%E5%9C%B0%E4%B8%BB Of course, ACE is known for its pro-Mao example sentences and so forth, so perhaps it's not surprising that they sanitize this term somewhat. 4) In addition, the current def doesn't even make it clear that the person is actually present during his public denunciation. https://hk.news.appledaily.com/international/daily/article/20160514/19611728 6) Here's what one writer on the Web says about the ACE definition: |
