1) It's not just savings, it's savings that are *invested* in sth.
2) It's not necessarily one's "life" savings.
3) Capital is not said to "arise" from somebody's hard work (blood, sweat and tears).

後者卻往往血本無歸。
but the latter can end up costing the investors their shirts.

菜農在血本無歸、不願再種菜的情況下,供給量又會減少;
if farmers get no return for their effort and investment, and are no longer willing to grow vegetables, the supply will fall further.

卻也血本無歸。
and they couldn't recoup their investment.
Diff:
- 血本 血本 [xue4 ben3] /hard-earned savings/capital (arising from one's blood and sweat)/
+ 血本 血本 [xue4 ben3] /hard-earned capital/
- 血本無歸 血本无归 [xue4 ben3 wu2 gui1] /to lose one's life savings (e.g. after a bankruptcy)/no return for one's hard-earned savings/
+ 血本無歸 血本无归 [xue4 ben3 wu2 gui1] /to lose everything one invested (idiom)/to lose one's shirt/
