<< review queue entry 61349 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_carrier https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%8B%96%E9%93%BE https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E6%8B%96%E9%93%BE History: 1) "cable chain; tow" appears in Wu Guanghua, ed. 《汉英大词典》Hàn-Yīng Dà Cídiǎn (1993) 2) ABC editors copy the definition verbatim. (This is noted in the full version of the definition, which includes a note "ref vwu2592a3", which is a reference to Wu's dictionary.) 3) Karan copies the definition verbatim into CC-CEDICT. My question is: Which noun sense of "tow" is this? The word "tow" does not appear anywhere in the Wikipedia article mentioned above. Here are the definitions of the noun "tow" in Merriam-Webster: Noun entry #1 1 a : the act or an instance of towing b : the fact or state of being towed 2 a : something towed (such as a boat or car) b : a group of barges lashed together and usually pushed 3 a : something (such as a tugboat) that tows b : ski tow 4 : a rope or chain for towing Noun entry #2 1 : short or broken fiber (as of flax, hemp, or synthetic material) that is used especially for yarn, twine, or stuffing 2 a : yarn or cloth made of tow b : a loose essentially untwisted strand of synthetic fibers Noun entry #3 (chiefly Scotland and dialects of England): rope None of these seems to correspond to the item described in Wp: "guides designed to surround and guide flexible electrical cables and hydraulic or pneumatic hoses connected to moving automated machinery" |
