<< review queue entry 60103 - submitted by 'marcardar' >> All other words containing 朋友 have 友 in neutral tone. ABC also uses neutral tone for this word. ------------------------------- Editor: > "All other words containing 朋友 have 友 in neutral tone." You mean in CC-CEDICT? They could be wrong. Alternatively, those other words could be right, but 小朋友 could be different. Or maybe [you3] and [you4]* and [you5] are all correct in some or all of the words containing 朋友, possibly depending on circumstances and context. * Regarding [you4], see the last two paragraphs below. > "ABC also uses neutral tone for this word." Let me tell you about the history of ABC's entry for 小朋友. First, they copied the definition and pinyin (at that time it was xiǎopéngyǒu, with 3rd tone yǒu) from 《汉英词典》"A Chinese-English Dictionary" (Wei Dongya, ed.) (If you doubt it, have a look at a 1978 copy of 《汉英词典》. ABC, which started much later, has a definition of 小朋友 that is virtually identical. This is true of many of the entries in 《汉英词典》.) Then, in 2001, ABC changed the 3rd tone to a neutral tone. If you look at the full entry in Wenlin you can see a note: "2001.02 Changed you3 to you0, for consistency with peng2you0." Apparently, in both cases, they didn't assign the tone value on the basis of research, or on the basis of input from several native-speaking experts. They did it a) on the basis of what one other dictionary said (viz. [you3]), and then later b) to be "consistent" with another ABC entry [you5] Anyway, ABC is just one source. Last time someone queried the pinyin of our 小朋友 entry, I found that the following sources all gave xiǎopéngyǒu as the pinyin for 小朋友. New Century (FLTRP) New Age (Commercial Press) Contemporary Chinese Dictionary Oxford Chinese Dictionary Xiandai Hanyu Cidian nciku's Comprehensive Chinese-English Dictionary nciku's Contemporary Standard Chinese Dictionary Dr.eye Bing Dictionary http://cn.bing.com/dict/ http://www.zdic.net/ http://cidian.51240.com/xiaopengyou__cidianchaxun/ In addition, the two mainland speakers of Mandarin who recorded audio for 小朋友 at Forvo use third tone (yǒu). https://forvo.com/word/%E5%B0%8F%E6%9C%8B%E5%8F%8B/#zh And, interestingly, when I listened to the audio of the sentences on the following page, it seemed to me that 友 was pronounced with a *falling* tone, rather like [you4], in five of the first six sentences. http://chinesepod.com/tools/glossary/entry/%E5%B0%8F%E6%9C%8B%E5%8F%8B Also, when I listen to to the audio clips for 好朋友 (not 小朋友) on the following page, it sounds rather like [you4] in many cases. http://chinesepod.com/tools/glossary/entry/%E5%A5%BD%E6%9C%8B%E5%8F%8B |
