The question here is whether, in traditional character texts, 悽涼 and 淒涼 are equally used for all of these senses, or whether their meanings can be distinguished to some extent as "mournful; miserable" on the one hand, and "desolate (place)" on the other. If you look at the Change Log entry for this word, you'll see that 悽涼 and 淒涼 were deliberately given separate entries with different definitions. The comment there was "[This is] another case where spelling [i.e. the choice of 淒 or 悽] may be significant [in relation to the meaning of the word]." Here is an example where 淒涼 appears to mean something more like "desolate (place)" than "mournful; miserable". 以及她對「淒涼又陌生」的環境、無從推知的未來，the apprehensive feelings she harbors towards the "cold, unfamiliar" city and the unknown future. And here is an example where 悽涼 is used to mean "mournful; miserable", not "desolate (place)". 這是中學時音樂課唱的一首歌，當時印象深刻，覺得它有股說不出的悽涼辛酸， We used to sing this song in junior high, and it left a deep impression on me. I thought it sounded so forlorn and sad. If you want to combine the two entries, you need to provide some evidence that both 淒涼 and 悽涼 are equally likely to be used for both senses. |
