1) It seems to be more of a Tw word -- GV says
"迹证" - About 24,800 results
"跡證" - About 128,000 results
It was submitted by sven70, who was based in Tw.
By the way, it seems no other dict has this word(?)

2) It's a noun, and "traces of" is ... well, it's not a noun anyway.
Yves suggested /traces/material evidence/ in the original discussion.
Philip ignored that and made it "traces of".
(Yves also wrote " It's things that have been left behind and can serve as evidence, f.i. stone tools in archeology.")

3) TP ~ 「若因此而使法官在判案時因為破壞現場跡證、證據不足而無法判罪,
"It would have been devastating if this destruction of the evidence had led to a ruling of not guilty for lack of evidence."

Goedhart's approach to unearthing artifacts is very scientific. He first collects legends and anecdotes, then traces them to likely real-world locations where he looks for material evidence, e.g. a tile structure poking up out of an earthen mound, a shattered household item, or even genetic traces in the faces of locals.
Diff:
- 跡證 迹证 [ji4 zheng4] /traces of/material evidence/
+ 跡證 迹证 [ji4 zheng4] /(Tw) traces/material evidence (archaeology, criminal investigation etc)/
