I don't think it means "to save one's face" (avoid humiliation). 3. People just don't use the expression "stay on one's dignity" – sounds like an idiom, but it's not. It appears to be a wording derived from the genuine idiom "stand on one's dignity", which means "insist on being treated with due respect", which is off the mark for 要面子. Elsewhere on the RQ I've proposed the following def for 愛面子. Would the same def do for 要面子? /to like to look good in the eyes of others/sensitive about how one is regarded by others/proud/ Or should we just say "see 愛面子"? Or is there a significant difference between the two expressions?
