Comment: << review queue entry 59503 - submitted by 'richwarm' >>
1. Note that "turn and leave abruptly" is exactly the same as our def for 拂袖而去.
(See my sub for that one elsewhere on the queue.)
But they have quite different meanings:
- 拂袖而去 implies that the person who is leaving is upset, whereas
- 扬长而去 implies that it's those who are left behind that are most likely upset.

2. I'm not sure that the lit. part is helpful. I suggest omitting it.

3. All dicts say there is an element of objectionable behavior: the person who leaves does so haughtily or rudely, leaving others behind, muttering under their breath.

4. I thought of adding "to leave others in one's dust" as a 4th gloss. Not sure about it, but it does seem good for a few of the examples below (TP 2 &3 expecially).
-------------------------------------

TP
He was still haggling over a lousy 50 cents per bag! I gave in, but he made no move to pay any money. Instead, he said, "I'll be back later," and walked off. I never saw him again.

A sedan suddenly hurtles past. Instantly, your seething blood comes to a boil.

Things got worse when the bus driver dumped all the passengers on the outskirts of Beijing and zoomed off.
----------------------------------

Some of the J sentences:
1. The punk kids just thumbed their noses at us and walked off.

2. Only now and then a stranger passing noticed the small group, handed out a coin, and went away, unheeding.

3. Wearing a fur coat, Blewett had the sick child stripped to the waist and shot for 15 to 20 minutes. After they finished shooting, they left the child undressed and didn't even cover the latter with the quilt.
Diff:
- 揚長而去 扬长而去 [yang2 chang2 er2 qu4] /to shake one's sleeve and leave (idiom); to turn and leave abruptly/
