If you look up "chopper" in an English dictionary, you'll find multiple senses, but none of them really conveys what sort of thing a 砍刀 is. Jukuu examples translate 砍刀 as "machete": 1) They used a machete to cut through the bush. 他们用砍刀在灌木丛中开辟出一条路。 2) Recovery teams Monday are using machetes and chain saws to hack through the dense mangrove forest to reach the wreckage and search for bodies. 救援人员星期一用砍刀和链锯在浓密的红树林中开出一条通道，到达坠机残骸现场搜寻遇难者遗体。 LA's definition sounds like a machete, too: 砍竹木等用的刀。刀身較長，刀背較厚。例 「掄起砍刀」、「用砍刀伐竹」。 The Baidu article on 砍刀 says 很多少数民族也使用砍刀，[...] 傈僳族 木板房的宽大木板，都是用砍刀劈成的。 And I see in other places that the Lisu knife is referred to as a machete: - "Like the indigenous inhabitants of the Salween, the Lisu fought with machetes and crossbows" - "all [the Lisu] really needed to make a start for themselves in life was a machete, willingness, a spouse, and an open piece of land" Editor: it's also a weapon, I've just seen one like that in a kongfupian, tip larger than root, but I think "machete" serves well |
