"triple check" Keep looking. You'll find tone 5 in other sources (more trustworthy ones than Google Translate). Words listed in the dictionary as having tone 5 can be assumed to be sometimes pronounced with the underlying tone (in this case, tone 3), depending on the context. For example, 那里 is more likely to be tone 3 if it's spoken - slowly for a beginner, or - as an isolated word (rather than in a sentence), or - by a Taiwanese speaker |
