<< review queue entry 59349 >> I lived in Chengdu for some time and this term is very common over there and in Sichuan in general. Basically, 川普 is a Sichuanese person's attempt at putonghua, it can be almost indistinguishable from the dialect, or just lightly accented putonghua, there's no standard 川普. But usually it's accented putonghua with some Sichuanese words, like 巴适 or 晓得, 要得, 没得, 不得 etc. Anyway, they usually make a clear distinction between 普通话, 四川话 and 川普, hence the joke that a Sichuanese person can speak 3 languages. So I'd translate it as 'pidgin' rather than 'dialect'/'topolect'. More info here: http://baike.baidu.com/subview/1856809/1856809.htm “四川普通话,简称川普,又称椒盐普通话,是一种把四川话换上普通话的音调而成的一种语言,通常带有调侃的语气。 川普广泛流行于四川地区,一般地,会说普通话的四川人都能掌握,且川普被大量不会说普通话的人口作为交际时普通话的替代品。” And yes, nowadays it can also stand for Donald Trump, surprising as it may be. Feel free to add it, if you want to. --------------------------------------- Editor: Thanks. We have an entry for 唐納·川普, and I'll leave it at that for now. https://cc-cedict.org/editor/editor.php?handler=QueryDictionary&querydictionary_search=*%E5%B7%9D%E6%99%AE* > nowadays it can also stand for Donald Trump In fact, we've had an entry for Donald Trump written that way (川普) since 2009. |
