1. "branch" rather than "stem"--that's the sense you are likely to encounter

2. the idea that this means "ax handle" originates it seems from the one example in 诗经
Dicts all quote 國語: 今若大其柯,去其枝葉,絕其本根
which after reading the whole passage leaves me unconvinced, as it necessitates that the symmetric 其 have different referents.
Anyhow I am leaving this gloss.
