/do not/must not/
It's not "do not" as in "I do not like cats."
Or "must not" as in "The government must now allow this to continue."

K ~ (contraction of the prohibitive bùyào 不要) "don't...!"
Chao & Yang ~ don't ...!; don't!
Tuttle ~ "别 is a contraction of 不要 in an imperative sentence. It is only used colloquially."

Editor:
1. the notion that 別 is a contraction of 不要 is an urban legend.
2. as long as we have an entry for 不要, it might even contain "don't want"
Diff:
- 別 别 [bie2] /to leave/to depart/to separate/to distinguish/to classify/other/another/do not/must not/to pin/to stick (sth) in/
# + 別 别 [bie2] /to leave/to depart/to separate/to distinguish/to classify/other/another/(contraction of imperative 不要[bu4 yao4]), don't ...!/to pin/to stick (sth) in/
+ 別 别 [bie2] /to leave/to depart/to separate/to distinguish/to classify/other/another/don't ...!/to pin/to stick (sth) in/
# - 不要 不要 [bu4 yao4] /don't!/must not/
# + 不要 不要 [bu4 yao4] /don't ...!/don't!/
