as this word appears in 睃一眼, "glance at" kind of "works".
However I have a feeling that it might not be far from "peer at".
M example: 那婦人只顧把眼來睃武松
M says 睃眼 means 睜大眼睛注視, and 打睃 means 細看

Editor: Seems fairly convincing.
ACE's "look askance at", copied by ABC and K (and probably many others) seems an unfortunate way of putting it.
GR says "1. Regarder; voir." (as well as "2. Regarder qn de travers.")
