<< review queue entry 58705 - submitted by 'ycandau' >> 眠 doesn't mean "hibernation" The molt only lasts a short time, it doesn't deserve to be called "hibernation" Editor: LA. Web ~ My Silkworms Aren't Eating or Moving. What's Wrong? They will molt 3 to 4 times during growth. If your worms aren't eating and are sitting still (especially with their heads raised in the air), they're getting ready to molt. Your worms will spend one or two inactive days just before molting. ~ The silkworms will shed their skin three times while growing. The shed skins are beige and usually roll up into a round wad. Sometimes the tiny silkworms will eat their shed skin. The larger ones don't. Each stage the silkworm goes through is called an "instar". First instar caterpillars are black. The second and third instars are grayish-white with black heads. The fifth and final instar has a white head. In between each instar is a time of resting and molting. The Japanese say the silkworm is "sleeping". GR refers to it as "sommeil" (sommeil du ver à soie). Is that understood as being a period of activity in this context? Or is it perhaps another substandard def that's not in your printed GR? |
