following a remark of Rich's

1. 攀親
maybe "claim" is ambiguous. I think the original intent is "to claim that kinship entitles one to some preferential treatment". It's not "to claim that one has kinship"
"to seek a relation": even more confusing. Probably means "to seek a relative (to obtain sth)"

wording subject to revision

2. 攀亲道故
"suck up" is another of those expressions we use everywhere, like they covered everything in English. I don't think it's particularly apt.
Sucking up implies obsequiousness; that not in 攀親道故
Maybe the rest can be revised too
Diff:
- 攀親 攀亲 [pan1 qin1] /to claim kinship/to seek a relation/
# + 攀親 攀亲 [pan1 qin1] /to use kinship as a claim/
+ 攀親 攀亲 [pan1 qin1] /to seek to profit by family ties/

- 攀親道故 攀亲道故 [pan1 qin1 dao4 gu4] /to use old friends to climb socially (idiom); to suck up to sb/
# + 攀親道故 攀亲道故 [pan1 qin1 dao4 gu4] /to use old friends to climb socially (idiom)/
+ 攀親道故 攀亲道故 [pan1 qin1 dao4 gu4] /to use claims to kinship or friendship to climb socially (idiom)/
