I don't think kapok means "the flower of the cotton plant", nor is "cotton flower" a recognized name for kapok, as far as I can tell.
At any rate, references like LA show that 攀枝花 refers to the *tree* Ceiba pentandra.
(And that tree does not have cotton boll-like flowers — the fibers come from the *seed pods*.)
