Another of the 525.
Was originally "to rack one's brains" (in A) – Hah! One of cedict's favourite expressions.
"rack one's innermost brains" sounds weird to me.
Zero G results for "racked his innermost brains".
But hey, it makes our def totally different from what A says :-)

Some suggestions:
to mull over
to think long and hard
to turn over in one's mind
to ruminate
