M thinks they are ear-rings, who knows?

all dicts insist on the symbolic meaning; and it was probably an undertone in the movie where I saw it

Editor:
Certainly appears that it *can* be an earring/ear ornament.
博物館裡,收藏有一件最特殊的「人獸形玉玦耳飾」,是兩個人形頭上頂著一隻獸,製作精美細膩,傳達著人與神靈動物的溝通,堪稱是國寶級文物。
The museum also houses a very special "human-animal jade ornament," which has the form of two humans whose heads are connected by an animal shape, conveying a sense of communication between humans and animals.
See GI @ 人獸形玉玦耳飾.

(CE dicts describe 耳飾 as an ear ornament, rather than specifically an earring.)
Diff:
# 玉玦 玉玦 [yu4 jue2] /semi-annular jade pendant (often used as a symbol of separation or resolution, for homophony reasons)/
+ 玉玦 玉玦 [yu4 jue2] /penannular jade pendant (often used as a symbol of separation or resolution, for homophony reasons)/
