<< review queue entry 57788 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> This is yet another word whose definition in many dicts appears to derive from the ACE (漢英詞典) dictionary of 1978 (aka Pleco). NC, NA, Oxford Concise & ABC (for example) all say what Pleco says: "1. cut off; block 2. cut short; interrupt" [ACE's example sentences are ~ 'cut off the enemy's retreat'; 'dam a river' (1st sense) and 'he was interrupted by the telephone' (2nd sense)" In copying ACE, all these dictionaries failed to include the obvious: 截斷 often means "to slice off", as in - 有人將十支大釘釘入柱中,揮此寶劍一削,釘子全部截斷,劍鋒卻纖毫無損; at one stroke it cut clean through 10 large nails hammered into a wooden upright of a building, yet its edge was quite undulled. - 貓尾過長而下垂不振,或尾端為白色,早期台灣鄉間,為了去霉運,多半難逃被截斷的命運。 In the countryside of Taiwan during earlier times, most cats that had an overly long tail which hung down, or the tip of whose tails were white, could rarely escape the fate of having their tails lopped off, in order to ward off bad luck. ---------------------------- /to cut off (a conversation, a process etc)/to interrupt/ 卻使得這樣的自然死亡過程可以從中截斷, [CPR] provided a way of stopping the process of death half way through and turning back. 「廚餘做成堆肥,將把被焚化爐和掩埋場截斷的生態循環銜接起來,」 "Turning kitchen waste into compost will restore the eco-cycle that is disrupted by incinerators or landfills," /to truncate/ – see J. |
