I know. All dicts say sth like 紀年的起始年份. But all go on in this way: "如...耶穌誕生之年為元年。
That is, all substitute 元年 for 纪元 to designate the beginning; none give an example where 纪元 is "beginning". It sounds like an attempt at giving an etymological account of the word.

In actual use, you will find 纪元 used just as 纪年; Wp starts "纪年,或称纪元,..."

If you disagree, just add the two new glosses
