"eight-trigram battle array"
TP ~
In the eight-trigram battle array of Zhuge Liang, soldiers dressed in heavy armor draw into a circle to fend off the attacking forces of General Cao.

----------------------
"a fiendishly complicated predicament" doesn't work for 摆八卦阵
and
"a clever plan" is a bit lame
Those glosses were probably an interpretation of sth like Z @
But, even there, the "predicament" gloss doesn't work for the examples:

Or actually, it could have been
Does that support the "predicament" gloss?

----------------------
Z @ 摆八卦阵 ~ [arrange troops according to the Eight-Diagram tactics——be deliberately mystifying] 比喻布置疑阵,故弄玄虚
NA @ 摆八卦阵 ~ to present an eight-trigram battle array; to apply mystifying tactics
K @ 八卦阵 ~ ◊ {military, Taoism} the Eight-Trigram battle array (battle formation based on Taoist anti-traditional thought, believed to confuse an invading enemy army) ◊ unconventional mystifying strategy or tactics
Diff:
- 八卦陣 八卦阵 [ba1 gua4 zhen4] /lit. battle plan based on the eight trigrams (in legend); fig. a clever plan/a fiendishly complicated predicament/
