sometimes a bit more active than just letting things happen, like accepting that they happen
Not just things that happen, but also things that are brought on by other people

LA example:
you don't let punishment happen, you submit to it, you accept it

some typical uses in J:
He allows his children to run wild.
I bow to your sophistication.
We can't let Macmillan practice this emotional blackmail on us.
The majority rules in a democracy.
Diff:
- 聽任 听任 [ting1 ren4] /to let things happen/laissez-faire/
+ 聽任 听任 [ting1 ren4] /to let (sth happen)/to allow (sb to do sth)/to submit to/to yield/
