- "sb ready to substitute at any time for principal player" is superfluous (just a definition of "understudy")
- "substitute" is too broad a term to match 替角, esp. when there is a term that matches exactly – "understudy". At any rate, "understudy" should be the first gloss.

J suggests we could add "a double (in a movie)". (Would need checking.)
Two doubles were employed for this scene.
拍这个场面雇用了两个替角。

Z says the term is used figuratively as well, but it's probably unnecessary to include that, since it's the same in English:
随时准备接替另一人的角色的人或随时准备接替另一人的工作或职责的人
Diff:
- 替角 替角 [ti4 jue2] /substitute/sb ready to substitute at any time for principal player/understudy (substitute actor)/
+ 替角 替角 [ti4 jue2] /(theater) understudy/
