<< review queue entry 56787 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> "plastic arts" is found in many dictionaries, but GT's first suggestion is "visual arts", and, more importantly, OED, MW and Wp all seem to agree that the main meaning of "plastic arts" is its narrower sense, namely "art forms which involve physical manipulation of a plastic medium by moulding or modeling such as sculpture or ceramics" (Wp) or "art (as sculpture or bas-relief) characterized by modeling : three-dimensional art" (MW) However, going by LA's definition, 造型藝術 includes the likes of 繪畫 and 書法. That corresponds to the *wider* sense of "plastic arts", namely "all the visual (non-literary, non-musical) arts" (Wp) or "visual art (as painting, sculpture, or film) especially as distinguished from art that is written (as poetry or music) —often used in plural" (MW) |
