1. homogenizing -- variants, and not so common I think

2. translating 路费 as "fare" seems insufficient

3. it seems to me that beyond "travel expenses", these words mean "money for the voyage"--there is a difference
路費不夠
盘缠不夠
means, not that the expenses are not enough (!), but that your money is not enough.
Maybe that is what was intended by "traveling allowance"? Is that a good word?
other example: 这时她的盘缠已尽

from looking at a lot of examples, I get the feeling that this is the main meaning for 盤纏 (a word I see often in older literature), and the reverse holds for 路費 (a more modern word).
f.i. 盘缠很贵 gives 2 hits! 盘缠太貴 12 hits

4. in some examples 路費 is used for "toll"
