When referring to the bird species, Bitterns, this character is most likely pronounced jian1.

One can find evidence for this claim at the entry on zdic http://www.zdic.net/z/29/js/9CFD.htm.
jiān ㄐㄧㄢˉ
1. 鵁鶄,即“池鹭”,一种水鸟。

You could also look at the news article that originally informed my inquiry: http://hebei.ifeng.com/news/zbc/detail_2015_11/21/4580411_0.shtml
据刘队长介绍,这只怪鸟叫大麻鳽(jiān)

Although MANY database and dictionaries list this reading, I could not find evidence that this character is read yan2 outsdie these dictionaries. In fact, one can look for its usage among contemporary news coverage in China where journalists never teach readers the pronunciation yan2 and always use jian1. Merely do a google news search for yán 鳽 and jiān 鳽, and you will see this is true.

Re: "I could not find evidence that this character is read yan2 outsdie these dictionaries"
We found some.
E.g.,
1) 这个鸟的读音,也就是这个“鳽”字,字典里这个音读去声“jian”,可约定俗成就叫它“大麻鳽(yan 二声)
2) 海南虎斑鳽(yan)是我国特有鸟类,又名海南鳽
3) Q. * 紫背苇鳽(jiān 兼) Ixobrychus eurhythmus S
鳽yán(炎)
而《中国鸟类野外手册》也是念“yán”
到底哪个念法准确?
A. 鸟类学界都是念“yán”的,但是字典上查不到这个音,应该是特殊读法吧。

Wiktionary says "The left component of this character was originally 幵, and this was an ancient name for the Chinese pond heron. The jiān reading comes from the original left component. The left component has been substituted for 开 in both traditional and simplified Chinese. Mainland ornithologists have used this character in naming bitterns and certain other few species of heron, and have given it the reading yán."
