as I said at the time. 佩剑 will be used for a western-type weapon that is carried at the waist, whether "une épée" or "un sabre (western-type)" (both are "sword" in English).
Eastern-type sabers are uniformly 刀.

達達尼昂拔出佩劍,沖到門口。
d'Artagnan is of course carrying "une épée", never "un sabre"
