It often (usually?) goes further than simply hard to avoid, implying an obvious causation (without even the idea of escaping it):
我们都难免犯错误.
跟狗睡觉难免不被跳蚤咬。 (it's not "it's difficult to avoid not getting flea", but rather "you will get flea")
Diff:
- 難免 难免 [nan2 mian3] /hard to avoid/difficult to escape from/
+ 難免 难免 [nan2 mian3] /hard to avoid/difficult to escape from/will inevitably/
