I'm not eating my words, 作主 doesn't mean 'support'. But when sb who feels he has been wronged asks sb powerful to 作主, he is asking for redress, which can be construed into 'support'.

Many examples in older novels, but I have an example on J:
The messenger led her to the chief's room. She dropped to her knees and kowtowed. "Please give me justice, your honour," she intoned.
到了区上。 交通员把她引到区长房子里,她趴下就磕头,连声叫道:“区长老爷,你可要给我做主
Diff:
- 作主 作主 [zuo4 zhu3] /to decide/to make decisions/to take responsibility (for deciding)/to be in charge/
+ 作主 作主 [zuo4 zhu3] /to decide/to make decisions/to take responsibility (for deciding)/to be in charge/to give sb justice/
