<< review queue entry 56587 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> R ~ You can repeat a year in order to try to get higher exam grades. At my high school, there was always a small cohort of students who were voluntarily repeating their final year, presumably to get a better university offer. Would that be regarded as 留班? If so, then I guess there is nothing wrong with "to repeat a year" and "to be held back" would be too narrow. Y ~ ah, ok. yes that would be regarded as 留班: 选择留级 或者没有考上理想的大学,很多人都会选择“留级”,“复读”, ------------------------------- A only has the "held back" sense: 留级 fail to advance in school grade 留班 fail to be promoted in (school) grade; stay down K ~ 留級/留级 liújí [ v ] ◊ fail a grade in school, repeat the previous year of schooling 留班 liúbān ◊ {colloquial} (of pupils) fail a grade in school LA has the same def for both words ~ 學習成績不及格而留在原年級重新學習。 |

# Not sure whether the additional sense applies to both words - 留級 留级 [liu2 ji2] /to be held back in the same grade (in school)/ + 留級 留级 [liu2 ji2] /to repeat a year in school/ - 留班 留班 [liu2 ban1] /to be held back in the same grade (in school)/ + 留班 留班 [liu2 ban1] /to repeat a year in school/ |
