stumbled on this one and thought it might be not quite right.

To my knowledge, 枕头箱 are those elongated boxes, you can see examples on GI. I own one.

Some dicts are noncommittal:
枕头箱收藏首饰、契约等贵重物品的小箱子。常放在卧室中。
but M states
舊時一種既可當枕頭,又可收藏銀錢﹑首飾或文件等貴重物品的小箱子

shows that the father was really using the box as pillow.

These examples however are from fiction. They show that Chinese, like me, think those were really pillows; they are not definite proof that this is historically accurate. Maybe the box evolved from a real pillow into a decorative item.
