maybe there is a more correct, technical word for that?

勒 is to use the reins, "reining in" is just a special case.
First examples on Z:

Diff:
- 勒馬 勒马 [le4 ma3] /to rein in a horse/
+ 勒馬 勒马 [le4 ma3] /to guide a horse with the reins/to rein in a horse/
