LA
"palming off" generally doesn't involve a switch (i.e. there's deception, but no *theft*)

Maybe also consider rewriting the def:
/to steal sb's valuable item and substitute a similar-looking but worthless item/ ?
**********************************************************************
previous def was:
/to substitute in secret (a fake for the genuine item)/to palm off/

掉包 involves a switch, but the victim may not have owned the object, thus no theft; "palm off" sounds like a good equivalent.

車回原廠保養 油品被掉包 (they used inferior oil, not the trademark one)
Diff:
- 掉包 掉包 [diao4 bao1] /to steal sb's valuable item and substitute a similar-looking but worthless item/
+ 掉包 掉包 [diao4 bao1] /to steal sb's valuable item and substitute a similar-looking but worthless item/to sell a fake for the genuine article/to palm off/
- 調包 调包 [diao4 bao1] /to steal sb's valuable item and substitute a similar-looking but worthless item/also written 掉包[diao4 bao1]/
+ 調包 调包 [diao4 bao1] /see 掉包[diao4 bao1]/
