all very ambiguous nouns.
in fact, the def of "carry on" in the dict doesn't even look like "inherit"
---------------------------------------------
Editor: "ambiguous nouns"?
There are no nouns in the definition, only verbs.

> all very ambiguous?
These verbs are not very ambiguous when placed alongside each other.

> the def of "carry on"
There is no definition of "carry on" in this entry.

> doesn't even look like "inherit"
Why should it?

繼承 means to "inherit" in the legal, biological, and computing senses.
e.g. 母方卵子與父方精子中存在的「某種液體」混合、是孩子繼承父母兩方特徵的原因。

But essentially those are all shades of the same meaning – "inherit" is not really "very ambiguous".
Adding "(property)" would create unnecessary clutter and would suggest that "inherit" only has the legal sense.

> "to succeed to sb"
One says "He succeeded his father as manager of the firm."
Not "He succeeded to his father as manager of the firm."
There are only 15 Google hits for "He succeeded to his father as".
Maybe you're thinking of "succeed to the throne".
Diff:
- 繼承 继承 [ji4 cheng2] /to inherit/to carry on/to succeed/
# + 繼承 继承 [ji4 cheng2] /to inherit (property)/to succeed to sb/to carry on (after sb)/
+ 繼承 继承 [ji4 cheng2] /to inherit/to succeed to (the throne etc)/to carry on (a tradition etc)/
