1) By its construction, 胡编乱造 looks like a verb, and it seems to be a verb in all the J examples. A gives all of its glosses in verb form.

2) What does "reckless invention" mean? I don't really know. It sounds like guesswork or an attempt to give a direct translation of the characters.

3) "cock-and-bull" has hyphens

4) 胡编乱造 is not necessarily about a story that is so obviously absurd as a cock–and–bull story, if J examples are anything to go by, so I added "to make things up".
