Original or origin is an concept which differs importantly from the existing English entries of 'primary' or 'first'. In my impression this was used more in earlier classical Chinese but has persisted better outside of China, for example in the Japanese phrase 身元調査 which describes investigations in to someone's genealogical origin. See http://zhongwen.com/cgi-bin/zipux.cgi?=%A4%B8 for a supporting definition.

Editor: Since you have submitted anonymously, we can't contact you for clarification, so I'm going to turn down your suggestion for now.

You don't explain how "original" differs importantly from "first"? The main meaning of both words is "coming before all others".

Can you point to any word containing 元 where "original" would be better than "first"?

元配 is "first wife".
元年 is "first year of an Emperor's reign"
元旦 is "first day of a new year"

I'd say "original" isn't quite as good as "first" in those cases.
Diff:
# - 元 元 [yuan2] /unit of money (in PRC: Chinese yuan, in USA: dollar, etc)/primary/first/
# + 元 元 [yuan2] /unit of money (in PRC: Chinese yuan, in USA: dollar, etc)/primary/first/original/
