Our definition is pretty much the same as what various dictionaries say.
But I find these definitions hard to grasp.

A ~ classes and grades in school
FLTRP ~ classes and grades in school -- See http://test.2u4u.com.cn/online/
Contemporary Chns dict ~ general term for classes and grades in school
NA ~ classes and grades in school

Why always plural? The examples below show it isn't necessarily plural.
Why classes AND grades?
"grade" can mean something different from a "class"
class ~ a group of students who are taught together, usually at a regularly scheduled time and in the same subject.
grade ~ the students in the same year of study at a school

The examples below seem to suggest it just means "class" (and not "grade" or "classes and grades").

Collins says it means "class", although they too choose to use the plural form: "classes".

K alone has "class" (singular), although it seems to hedge its bets by including "class and grade (in a school)": ◊ class ◊ class and grade (in a school)

What is "class and grade" supposed to mean? Is it like "My 班級is 5B" = "I'm in the 5th grade, class B".
Or is K just mindlessly copying all the other dicts, but converting to the singular?

M ~ 現行教育制度上的一種編制。學校按學生的年齡或程度,分為若干組,各自獨立為一單位,以便教學。
(there's that word 編制 again, btw)

Z ~ 总称学校中的班次与年级。如:高三班级;初二班级。

LA ~ 學校裡班和年級的合稱。

(Those English definitions above seem to be based on Chns defs like Z's and LA's.)

Examples:
L ~
- 我班级里的所有男生都喜欢詹妮佛。
All of the boys in my class were sweet on Jennifer.
- 因为在月考中我们班级得了第一,老师满脸的笑意。
The teacher smiles as our class won the first place in the monthly exam.
- 她总是最后一个到班级的人。
She is always the last one to arrive to class.

J ~ It took the teacher months to bring her class under control.
老师花了好几个月的工夫才控制住她所教的班级。
(plenty more examples there)

TP ~ 「先到各班級去觀察眼睛,」他指出,眼睛靈活是打好桌球的第一要件
"I first go to every class and examine kids' eyes." Good eyes are the first precondition for playing ping-pong well.

減少班級學生數等
reductions in class size, etc.,

記得那時候的班級人數很多,五、六十人擠得滿滿的
I remember there were a lot of people in our class then, 50 or 60 of us all packed in together.

「是不是每個學校都有體罰?可能吧。但是不是每個班級都在體罰?那就不見得。」
"Does corporal punishment happen in every school? Probably. But does it happen in every class? Not necessarily."

八十二年新版本編輯出來前,曾選擇部分小學或班級進行教學實驗
When the new texts first came out in 1993, a small number of primary schools and classes were selected for a trial run.
Diff:
- 班級 班级 [ban1 ji2] /classes or grades in school/
# + 班級 班级 [ban1 ji2] /class (group of students who are taught together)/
+ 班級 班级 [ban1 ji2] /class (group of students)/grade (in school)/
