<< review queue entry 55681 - submitted by 'goldyn_chyld' >> Wp: From the 1860s Taiwan ports were opened up time after time to those coming from abroad, including Dutch, Portuguese, British, American and Japanese sailors and merchants. Some of these visitors penetrated deeply into the western part of the island where the Han Chinese were concentrated, each side supplying the other's needs, while others traipsed all over the island, exploring its geography and entering the "land of the savages," as yet unseen by the outside world, leaving behind a valuable written and pictorial record. Nevertheless, limited by finances and a dearth of homegrown translation talent, Taiwan historians have never been able to put this 19th-century material left behind by foreign visitors together in a comprehensive way. |
