LA, M say it's "to faint"
others dicts seem to indicate that it's "to choke (in anger etc)"

Me, I don't see how you can faint from anger.
I don't quite see either how you can stop breathing and not be dead.

I suspect that 背氣 is in fact literally a dead faint, a kind of seizure, and when used figuratively it's a bit like "I nearly had a stroke"
No proof of that, so you can criticize the def

You can also say "he nearly had a fit" to mean that he was extremely angry.
