Editor: you are quite right. It seems that a number of C-E dicts copy each other in defining this as a noun. I'm leaving "large disparity" for those who want an instant translation, but really "large disparity" should be translated as 懸殊的差别 In a sentence like 年龄的悬殊甚至使它显得可笑, a superficial analysis could say that 懸殊 is a noun, "disparity", but i think it's better seen as "the fact of (things) being widely different", a gerund. In an expression like 貧富懸殊, 懸殊 is predicate, 貧富懸殊 is a whole sentence, and this sentence can be nominalized: the disparity between rich and poor. |
