And LA just says 動作或情況持續的一段時間. I read that as "a period of time in which some action or circumstance continues". They don't say it's a *short* period of time. On the other hand, even in my example above, where the period is some years, it may be short from a long-term perspective. 2) I don't like to get rid of "a while". It's the most common term used in TP to translate 一陣子. E.g. * 就這樣，先混一陣子再看吧。 so I'll just drift along for awhile and see what happens. * 再過一陣子，等桃樹開花，一定很美。 In a while, when they blossom, it is sure to be a lovely sight. * 所以有一陣子，他在中影大多在看書。 so after a while he started spending most of his time on the job reading. 3) I believe "fit of anger" resulted from our editor oversimplifying the entry of one dictionary (A). However, that dictionary makes it clear that the meaning is actually "a fit; a burst" of something such as anger, laughter, rain etc. (*not* anger in particular) Here is what A actually says: <quote> 一阵子 a burst/fit of anger/etc.〈coll.〉 a while; a short period of time 一阵 a burst of temper/rain/etc. 听了这话, 我心里∼发慌。 On hearing this, I was overcome with nervousness. <unquote> The "etc." in those definitions is important, but it was stripped out when our current entry was written. In the following example it's anger, but the 一阵子 is quite a long time (several weeks), not just a "burst" or a "fit": 您好，今天是月子17天，这一阵子生气，心情不好，宝宝吃了我的奶，腹泻，哭闹不停 ... 今天我也生气了，请问我现在给她喝奶粉还是继续母乳啊？ |
