Editor: "in a mess" tends to suggest "disordered" (to me at least), whereas I think it's more like "filthy; unhygienic; squalid; gross".

The following page, which admittedly is about Cantonese usage, says in part 「污糟」含意簡單,即是「不衛生」。

Also, the Z examples both have the collocation 污糟生活, which I interpret as "squalid life" or "unhygienic lifestyle" rather than a "life/style that is in a mess" or a "messy life/style".

+ 污糟 污糟 [wu1 zao1] /filthy/unhygienic/squalid/gross/
