<< review queue entry 55405 >> Taken from an excerpt of 黑白李 by 老捨 in John Defrancis' Advanced Chinese Reader page 330. The English definition I provided is vocabulary item 32.0. It's possible the author made this word up, since, to my suprise, when I looked the word up, I found it at http://www.zdic.net/c/b/6a/102781.htm referencing the same fiction. Editor: that's a shrewd remark. When dicts all seem to quote the same passage, we can wonder if the word is ever used elsewhere; if not, it's hardly useful to have it in a dictionary--and the meaning of the word will have been guessed at. In the case of Laoshe, we also have to consider the possibility that the word was BJ dialect and is now obsolete. It's in fact very hard to evidence uses of this word. Most Google hits are false hits: 自創練身法 新创练琴法 I do find a number of uses about military: 清末江苏创练宪兵杂记 一方面又創練陸軍 仿用西法创练新兵 他在小站创练了一支新式陆军 where the formation of the word seems natural, as well as wushu training 为了创练一套举世无双、完美无缺的功夫 因当时此拳系由女子所创练，故称之为“娥眉拳”。 创练武术者的目标 we also have this entry on Z: 犹创练。 赵树理 《锻炼锻炼》：“ 小腿疼 比她年纪大，创荡得早，又是正主任 王聚海 ，支书 王镇海 ，第一队队长 王盈海 的本家嫂子。” and 创荡 (itself rare) gives other things like 创荡江湖 |
