By my reading of the definitions, a 验电器 is for detecting the presence of an electrical charge on a body, not for detecting an electrical *current* (flow of electrons). A device to detect and measure current would be 電流表.

Compare GI @ electroscope and @ 验电器

Wp says "rheoscope" is "no longer used to describe electrical instruments."

Editor: more correctly, an instrument to detect current would not be an ammeter but a galvanometer, 檢流計
Diff:
- 驗電器 验电器 [yan4 dian4 qi4] /a rheoscope (for detecting electric current)/
+ 驗電器 验电器 [yan4 dian4 qi4] /electroscope/
